What are you Grateful For?

Gratitude – one simple little word, and yet it is extremely powerful.

It is more than a word, it is also a state of mind.  When we express gratitude in our lives, we are also expressing love and it opens a huge, new world to us.  The practice of gratitude is something that my mother instilled in me at a young age and something I forgot about when I reached my 20s and 30s and began experiencing difficulties in my life.

The absence of gratitude in one’s life is generally accompanied by an attitude of victimization.  “That person didn’t deserve that job, I did. Why is the whole world against me.  Nothing good ever happens to me. My brother/sister was always more loved than me.”  And on, and on, and on, until the person is leading a life of total negativity.

Some feel opposites attract, but the truth is, likeness attracts.  Negative people attract negative people and negative things in their life.  Positive people tend to be surrounded by other positve people and positive things in their life because everyone wants to be around them.  So how do we, as mere mortals, turn our negatives into positives.  The key work is gratitude.

Oprah started a whole “gratitude” movement a number of years ago when she started telling people to start a gratitude journal.  And she was right.  Get up each morning and write 3 things you are grateful for and then before you go to bed write about 3 things that happened to you throughout the day that you are grateful for.  They don’t have to be big, life changing things, start small.

  • Notice how your face felt as you faced the sun and how grateful you were for the warmth.
  • Notice how the bus arrived at the bus stop just as you did so you didn’t have to wait 10 minutes.
  • Notice how the sound of a child laughing made you feel, notice how the bank teller greeted you when you got to the wicket.
  • Notice the smell of baking bread from the local bakery as you walk down the street.

These are all small things that we take for granted everyday, day in and day out, and often never notice them.  Notice them and be grateful for them.  In addition to being grateful, noticing the small things will also bring you into the present, into the now.  It will take you away from all the negativity as you dwell “in the moment” feeling grateful.

Slowly, but surely, you will move from the land of negativity and victimization to the land of positivity and gratefulness.  One of the universal laws is, whatever you give out, you get back threefold, or more.   Now that’s something to be grateful for.
